A Fifth Grade Reading Reward Program

 

Students are challenged to read ten books from ten different genres

(categories) each quarter. Books should be at an appropriate level for the

student, something that can be completed in 1 – 2 weeks of regular reading

homework.

After reading the book, the student completes a card with information

about the book and signs up to give a book talk to the class.

 

The genres are as follows:

Adventure: a fictional or true-life story where the main character goes on

a journey, a quest, a trip, and encounters exciting obstacles. (Treasure

Island)

Mystery: a story where the main plot line revolves around finding a fact,

person, or solution to a puzzle. (The Secret in the Old Mill)

Biography: an account of a real person’s life. (Young Abraham Lincoln)

Animals: may be either an informational book or a story that has an animal

as a main character (Whales or Black Beauty)

Fiction: a story that takes place in modern times, is not true, but could

happen (Ramona the Pest)

Fantasy: a story that could not happen, often involving magic, or talking

animals, or imaginary things. (Harry Potter)

Science Fiction: a story that could not happen, often involving time travel

and futuristic worlds and machines (Tom’s Midnight Garden)

Historical Fiction: a story that takes place in historical times, it could be

based on a true story, or made up. (Number the Stars)

Non-Fiction: true facts, history, science, information on particular subjects

(Grand Canyon, A Trail Through Time)

Classic: A book that is well known and has been popular for a long time

because of it’s artistic value. (The Adventures of Tom Sawyer)

Award Winner: a book that has won the Newberry, Caldecott, Young

Reader, or Coretta Scott King award for children’s literature.

Free-choice: any book appropriate to the reader’s level.

 

All of these genres are available in our school library or in my classroom.
